Misinformation Studies

Misinformation studies is a systematic study of inadvertently false or inaccurate information and its dynamics, which increasingly requires experimental and computational approaches alongside attention to social and cognitive drivers.

We recognise that traditional perspectives - treating misinformation as simply "wrong facts" or individual errors - fail to capture how cognitive biases, social norms, and platform logics interact to make false content believable and shareable.

Recent reviews show a growing, data-driven field focused on prevalence, diffusion, detection, and characteristics of misinformation, often using experimental designs and large-scale digital trace data.

We upgrade misinformation studies by strengthening rigorous, ethics-conscious methods for studying how and why misinformation spreads, whom it affects, and what works to mitigate its impact.
