Gendered Disinformation

We expose gendered disinformation in migration as the false narratives and online deception campaigns specifically built to target, silence, or exploit female migrants and refugees.

We highlight that women and girls face unique digital threats.

This includes targeted scam operations promising domestic work abroad that frequently end in severe labour trafficking and sexual exploitation. On top of that, female refugees often face coordinated online harassment campaigns.

Migration agencies point out that standard migration research usually overlooks the gendered dimensions of information disorder (IOM Bangladesh, 2023).

We address this blind spot through dedicated research focused on how online deception impacts women in South Asia. We develop gender-sensitive literacy solutions and create safe spaces for female trafficking survivors to share their digital experiences.

Our advocacy explicitly calls for migration governance frameworks that recognise and protect against the specific, gendered nature of digital scams.
