Community-based Fact-checking

We champion community-based fact-checking as the practice of verifying local rumours and misinformation by working with affected communities.

We push this approach because information disorder in migration usually starts as word of mouth before it ever hits social media. In rural Bangladesh, rumours about lucrative overseas jobs or sudden changes in refugee policies spread fast, leading to dangerous outcomes.

Top-down fact-checking usually fails to reach the marginalised communities hit hardest by false stories.

We bridge this gap by training local youth, grassroots leaders, and returned migrants to act as fact-checkers inside their own networks. This type of community engagement makes sure debunking efforts actually make sense culturally and reach people immediately.

We fold these verified findings into our broader research, using grassroots intelligence to drive national advocacy campaigns. This helps governments design migration policies that reflect on-the-ground realities instead of digital fictions.
